CRITIQUE – Un récit vibrant qui reconstitue la rencontre de Zweig avec Bernanos en 1942 au Brésil.

La réalité nous offre parfois des spectacles, des situations, des scénarios que les plus inventifs raconteurs d’histoires n’auraient osé imaginer. Prenons, par exemple, l’improbable rencontre entre Georges Bernanos et Stefan Zweig un jour de 1942 à Barbacena, au Brésil. Au regard de leurs origines et de leurs parcours, rien ne prédestinait les deux écrivains à se croiser dans ce pays durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Sébastien Lapaque, journaliste au Figaro littéraire, inlassable lecteur et passeur de Bernanos, auquel il a consacré plusieurs livres, amoureux du Brésil – qui constitue le cœur vibrant et non le simple décor de son roman La Convergence des alizés –, ne pouvait laisser échapper un tel motif. Une vingtaine d’années de voyages, d’entretiens, de lectures, d’enquêtes, de pèlerinages dans des lieux chargés de mémoire ont façonné la forme et l’esprit d’Échec et mat au paradis, livre gigogne dont les tiroirs à double fond révèlent des trésors.
